Replacing the glass in an older single pane window is a project that may be within the capabilities of an experienced do it yourselfer but it s a complex job that requires removing the old putty and glazier s points removing the broken. Apply the epoxy to the crack in the glass using a putty knife. Press the epoxy over and into the crack with a putty knife. This putty often lasts decades but over the years it becomes rock hard cracks and even falls off the window.

On closer inspection i could see the glazing had cracked away from the window. Firstly remove all loose putty or flaky paint sand down and apply the filler using a filler knife. Take care not to scratch the glass when rubbing down. Once dry rub down using a medium grade abrasive paper till smooth.

Replacing a broken pane in a modern insulated window is a task for a qualified glass repair technician. Loose or missing compound lets wind and rain leak in around the glass. I really love the looks of a true divided light window so when i had the house painted the painters re glazed the windows that needed new glazing. The only real reason to replace the putty is if it has become old and cracked or its integrity surrounding the glass has been compromised.

I still have all my original windows and don t ever want to replace them if i can avoid it. Replacing the putty around one pane of glass will take 15 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the pane and the stubbornness of the old putty.
